Position Summary:
The Maintenance Mechanic I plays a key role in supporting both field and shop operations by maintaining, repairing, and overhauling a wide range of tools and equipment used across the organization. This position is responsible for examining, dismantling, assembling, adjusting, and testing tools to ensure safe and reliable performance. The role involves operating power tools, performing various shop and field duties, and assisting with operations, maintenance, and construction activities as directed.
In this position, you will perform specialized fieldwork such as drilling and tapping steel, cast iron, and plastic mains; conducting air, nitrogen, and hydrostatic testing; and performing nitrogen purges, drawdown, and flaring operations. The Maintenance Mechanic I also receives, stores, and issues tools, equipment, materials, and parts, and completes tasks such as cutting plastic, cast‑iron, and steel pipe, as well as fabricating plastic fittings.
What This Role Delivers:
Respond to and assess emergency and priority situations.
Quickly respond to location.
Accurately report situations and means for control and repair.
Take necessary measures to ensure safety to life and property.
Operate valves, squeeze offs, plugs or other appropriate equipment to reduce or shutdown gas pressure.
Drive vehicles to job sites.
Perform tie-in related activities including tapping, stopping, purging, flaring and drawdown operations.
Responsible for adhering to Company Standards, policies and procedures.
Responsible for adhering to Federal, State and Local Codes.
Complete and verify all documents associated with job.
Take lead in seeing work is completed within given timeframe.
Load and unload material.
Make repairs to tools and equipment.
Store, issue, receive and inventory equipment.
Fabricate plastic fittings.
Clean and organize the shop.
Assists in operations, maintenance, construction, shop and field related work including but not limited to:
Assist in the installation, maintenance and construction of gas mains and services.
Assist in tightening, adjusting and repairing minor leaks and performing valve maintenance.
Work in confined spaces.
Wear respirator while working in gaseous atmosphere or confined space.
Operate power tools.
Tools:
Operate pneumatic tools: breakers, jack hammers, compactors and drills.
Use power equipment and machinery: saws, drill presses, cranes, forklift, ironworker, hydraulic presses.
Use numerous hand tools, pneumatic, hydraulic and electric.
Specialized Tasks:
Perform drilling and tapping cast iron, steel and plastic mains.
Perform stopping operations on steel, cast iron and plastic mains by use of squeeze offs, mechanical stoppers and bagging.
Fuse plastic mains and manufactured plastic fittings.
Monitor pressure gauges continuously during stop-off operations.
Perform air, nitrogen and hydrostatic pressure testing and air and nitrogen purging.
Operate core drill.
Operate equipment utilized to reduce carbon emissions including drawdown compressor and flaring.
Cut steel, plastic and cast-iron pipe by various means/methods.
Interpret company records:
Ability to read area maps.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings.
Able to understand schematics.
Keep accurate records for tools and equipment issued maintenance records and damage reports.
Able to fill out stock forms and shop orders.
Communication:
Use of terminology and professionalism while communicating on radio.
Able to professionally represent Company and maintain good working relationships while communicating with other employees and contractors.
Stock equipment and company vehicles:
Order materials needed for daily activities.
Secure and store materials safely.
Properly dispose of excess debris.
Keep vehicle neat and clean.
Maintain good housekeeping in work area.
Hazardous condition:
Extreme heat, dust, welding fumes, electrical shock, eye strain and burns
In addition to the activities described above:
May be assigned to related business support and administrative activities (ex. backend meter processing, backend corrosion processing, backend leak/damager prevention processing, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, cross functional training activities, etc.)

What You'll Need:
High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D.
Basic computer skills.
Must successfully complete and maintain all assigned training modules, qualifying exams and field clearances.
Pre-Hire Requirements:
Internal Employees: Must currently be a crew assistant or greater in Below Ground Field Ops with at least 2 years consecutive experience & currently have a CDL-Class B
External Employees: Must have at least 2 year's experience drilling, tapping and stopping pipe and/or fittings using equipment utilized by the Welding, Tie In & Fabrication Shop on Washington Gas facilities
Upon Hire:
Must pass gas odor recognition testing, successfully complete respiratory qualification to include all hygiene requirements needed to wear a tight-fitting respirator
Must successfully complete all assigned training modules, qualifying exams and field clearances (Maintenance Mechanic School).
Permanent position is based on passing all post hire requirements; candidates that are not able pass all requirements will default to their previously held positions. External candidates may be offered a Crew Assistant position as available or will be terminated at Company’s discretion.
*Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver’s License; FMC, CDL-Class B, Operating Engineer-Class A, PPJ-Fusion and Forklift qualification are required. Must meet Company driving standards.
