The Occupational Health Advisor provides expert occupational health leadership and clinical guidance to support workforce health, regulatory compliance, and bp’s Operating Management System (OMS). The role delivers risk‑based occupational health programs, medical and case management services, and proactive health promotion strategies across production, project, and operational environments.
 

Key Accountabilities:

Occupational Health & Clinical Expertise

  • Provide technical occupational health expertise to meet regulatory requirements and OMS conformance for applicable health elements.
  • Act as the single point of contact for contract occupational health and medical service providers, ensuring alignment with bp standards and objectives.
  • Support fitness‑for‑work and fitness‑for‑task determinations through health assessments and risk‑based health programs, including:
    • Health surveillance
    • Drug & alcohol programs
    • Ergonomics
    • Fatigue management
    • Travel and infectious disease health
    • Emergency medical response.

Case Management & Workforce Health

  • Lead and support medical case management, including occupational and non‑occupational illness/injury, disability management, rehabilitation, and return‑to‑work planning.
  • Provide clinical consultation on potential occupational illnesses and injuries, including monitoring, investigation support, and reporting.
  • Advise HR and line leaders on absence management, accommodations, and work restrictions.

Governance, Assurance & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct occupational health site visits, reviews, and self‑verification activities.
  • Verify compliance with medical confidentiality, records management, and professional standards.
  • Collate, analyze, and communicate workforce health data and metrics to inform leadership decisions and continuous improvement.

Programs, Contracts & Systems

  • Design, coordinate, and evaluate risk‑based occupational health programs aligned with business and regulatory needs.
  • Establish, manage, and monitor occupational health service contracts in accordance with procurement standards.
  • Support cost‑effective use of health resources while maintaining clinical quality.

Capability Building & Collaboration

  • Provide health expertise to HSSE, HR, Legal, Procurement, Emergency Response, and leadership teams.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and development of occupational health personnel.
  • Enable line leadership to identify health risks and implement practical controls and programs.

Wellness Advocate Responsibilities

  • Serve as a visible Wellness Advocate, championing workforce health, prevention, and well‑being across sites and functions.
  • Provide strategic and practical input to wellness and health promotion programs, including mental health, fatigue, ergonomics, and lifestyle‑based risk reduction.
  • Engage employees and leaders through education, outreach, and data‑informed initiatives that improve health outcomes and productivity.
  • Partner with Health, HSSE, and HR to integrate wellness into daily operations and business decision‑making.

Essential Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (minimum).
  • Registered Nurse (RN) – licensed in Texas (or ability to obtain).
  • Recognized qualification in Occupational Health (or actively working toward), such as COHN / COHN‑S or equivalent.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 4–5 years nursing experience, including medical/surgical, emergency, ambulatory, or community health.
  • At least 2–5 years occupational health experience in industrial, production, or complex operational settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Medical and disability case management
    • Fitness‑for‑work evaluations
    • Contractor and provider oversight
    • Stakeholder engagement and influence
  • Strong knowledge of occupational health regulations and health management systems.
  • Ability to participate in afterhours on‑call coverage as required.
  • Candidates must pass HUET – which includes underwater emergency escape scenarios, for offshore travel by helicopter
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN / COHN‑S / COHN‑S/CM).
  • Certified Case Manager (CCM).
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or related field.
  • Experience in oil & gas, energy, manufacturing, or high‑risk operational environments.
