About Oil Authority

A neutral authority for the global oil and gas industry since 2012

Our Story

Oil Authority Inc was founded by Adam Humphreys in 2012 to fill a gap in the energy industry: a neutral authority that gathers accurate news, information, and resources about oil and gas in one place. The industry is global, fast-moving, and often fragmented across regulators, company press rooms, and market data providers. Oil Authority brings those threads together so professionals, job seekers, and the public can find reliable answers without the noise.

We are based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, one of the world's great energy capitals, and we serve an international audience. Our coverage spans North America, the North Sea, the Middle East, and Australia, and our readers work everywhere the industry operates.

Where We Cover

Rig activity data covers Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, North Dakota, Texas, Pennsylvania, and the Norwegian continental shelf, with new jurisdictions added as reliable public data becomes available.

Our Data Sources

Accuracy starts with primary sources. Our drilling data comes directly from government regulators, including the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), the BC Energy Regulator, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources, the North Dakota Industrial Commission, the Texas Railroad Commission, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (Sodir). Market and policy reporting draws on company disclosures, OPEC, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Verified Company Profiles

Every profile in the directory can be claimed by the business that owns it. Claims are verified before they are approved: we confirm that the person claiming a profile actually represents the company, typically by matching their work email address to the company's website domain or through a verification code. Verified companies control their own listing, including their description, locations, team members, job postings, and marketplace products. This keeps the directory accurate and tells visitors that the information on a verified profile comes from the company itself, not a third party.

Editorial Independence

Oil Authority is not owned by, affiliated with, or funded by any oil and gas producer, service company, or industry association. Our editorial coverage is fact-based and attributed: we cite the companies, regulators, and analysts behind every figure we publish, and we keep advertising and listings separate from editorial decisions. When we get something wrong, we correct it.

For Professionals

Joining Oil Authority is free. A free account lets you build a professional profile, apply for jobs, and keep your industry credentials in one place. You can record your safety and trade certifications with their ticket numbers and expiry dates, and we send you a reminder before a certification expires, so you are never caught on site with an expired ticket. It is also a good way to connect with other industry members: your profile makes you visible to the community, you can be listed on your company's team, and you can find the people behind the companies you work with.

For Companies

If your company operates in oil and gas, you can add your company to the directory or claim your existing profile to manage your listing, post jobs, and publish press releases. Through the marketplace you can list heavy equipment, parts, and services in front of industry buyers at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising channels. See plans and pricing for details.
