About the role
As the Senior Manager, you will lead a Power Operations Real‑Time Desk and ISO Coordination function across multiple markets. This leader will own real‑time reliability and commercial execution (DAM/RTM), ensure flawless market communications with ISOs/RTOs, drive congestion and imbalance mitigation, and elevate operational rigor, compliance, and performance. The role requires deep market operations expertise (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, NYISO, ISO‑NE) and a proven track record of managing high‑tempo 24x7 operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the 24x7 Real‑Time Desk: unit dispatch guidance, bid/offer strategies (DAM/RTM), load/resource balancing, outage coordination, and real‑time risk management.
- Own real‑time P&L drivers (LMPs, congestion, losses, uplift) and ensure disciplined execution of strategy, limits, and controls.
- Direct curtailment response, emergency operations, scarcity events, and weather‑driven reliability actions.
- Supervise day‑ahead clearing and real‑time re‑optimization; ensure handoffs with Day‑Ahead trading, Asset Optimization, Transmission, and Risk.
- Serve as senior point of contact with ISOs/RTOs for operational matters: market communications, settlements exceptions, outage notifications, telemetry issues, and compliance inquiries.
- Ensure timely and accurate submissions: resource plans, DAM/RTM bids, ancillary service offers, telemetry/SCADA validations, outage cards, RUC responses, EEA procedures, and market messaging (e.g., MUI, Markets Gateway, CROW, OMS, outage schedulers).
- Drive congestion management: constraints monitoring, TLR/SCED awareness, re-dispatch guidance, and collaboration on CRR/FTR/TCC implications with Commercial and Risk.
- Maintain strict adherence to market rules and protocols; champion NERC/Regional standards awareness within a market participant’s scope (e.g., O&P that impact participants), NAESB and ISO‑specific procedures.
- Supervise tagging/scheduling quality (EIR e‑Tags), telemetry availability, ICCP/SCADA data integrity, EMS/AGC coordination, and evidence for audits.
- Establish SOPs, checklists, and MOC (management of change) for desk processes; conduct incident reviews and CAPAs.
- Along with VP Gas & Power Ops, provide leadership to ensure successful delivery of systems programs.
- Build a cohesive regional culture focused on value creation & customer service.
- Build a strong relationship with Enablers to ensure the business is run in a safe, controlled & efficient manner.
- Accountable for efficient resource utilization across gas and power operations teams.
- Support projects, initiatives, and find opportunities to drive value within the broader organization.
- Assign tasks and duties to your team to assist in Power Operations Support and Project Support, while maintaining compliance and oversite.
- Support the increase mandate and use of BI visual tools and capabilities to improve our performance, communication, and visibility of assets.
Essential education and requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work-related experience required
- Highly skilled in power market operations with at least 3–5 years in real‑time leadership or ISO coordination roles across multiple markets (preferably including ERCOT + at least one of PJM/MISO/SPP/CAISO/NYISO/ISO‑NE).
- Expertise in:
- DAM/RTM bidding & dispatch, ancillary services, congestion management, imbalance mitigation, RUC/commitment processes.
- ISO protocols, tariffs, and operational procedures; strong working knowledge of telemetry/SCADA/ICCP/EMS and market communications.
- Scheduling/tagging (EIR e Tags), NAESB standards; settlements touchpoints and dispute basics.
- Outage coordination and emergency operations (EEA/EECP, load shed protocols familiarity).
- Familiarity with ETRM (Endur or similar), OATI webTrader/webTrans, ISO portals (e.g., ERCOT MMS/EMIL; PJM Markets Gateway/eDART; MISO MUI/CROW; SPP Marketplace; CAISO BPM portals; NYISO MIS; ISO‑NE SMD), forecasting platforms, and data/BI tools.
Desired criteria
- Previous Natural Gas & Power scheduling experience highly desired
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Previous leadership experience preferred
- Has experience interacting with internal teams (Real-Time trading team, analysis team, trading support functions) across multiple locations and ISOs (including ERCOT/CAISO/PJM)
- Understanding of US Day Ahead and Intra-day Trading on US short-term markets
- Experience in power systems engineering and/or software development focused on generation, transmission, distribution and/or outage management
- Ability to lead through influence, develop a strong and engaged team
- Demonstrated knowledge of BI solutions and best practices for database solutions
- Has designed, developed, maintained, and deployed enterprise level reports using: Microsoft Access and Excel, SSRS Reporting Services (SQL), Tibco Spotfire
