Imaging Geophysicist

We are looking for a seismic imaging geophysicist who is passionate about solving complex subsurface imaging problems for bp’s upstream business.  Join us if you are innovative, love problem solving, and have experience in imaging technology R&D and application.  You will collaborate with some of the industry’s foremost imaging experts in the Seismic Technology team, a recognized leader in advancing seismic acquisition and digital imaging technologies.   The Seismic Technology team is part of bp’s Upstream R&D responsible for driving innovations in upstream.

Key Responsibilities

As an Imaging Geophysicist, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, high-impact seismic imaging products and solutions that support bp’s upstream oil and gas business. Working in close partnership with assets, regions, the Seismic Delivery Team, and subsurface technology colleagues, you will help advance both R&D innovation and practical applications that improve subsurface understanding, support business decisions, and create measurable value.

You will work on technical challenges such as numerical modeling, seismic inversion, digital signal processing, and field-data applications. The role requires strong analytical and computational skills to develop, test, and apply imaging solutions using large datasets and high-performance computing resources.

  • Build proficiency with bp’s seismic imaging technologies, proprietary processing toolkits, workflows, and computational frameworks.
  • Identify opportunities where new imaging methods or workflows can deliver business impact across exploration, appraisal, development, and production.
  • Translate research ideas into practical, robust applications to solve real subsurface challenges.
  • Support seismic survey design and operations through numerical modeling, field-data analysis, and collaboration with delivery teams and regional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across geophysics, subsurface disciplines, data science, engineering, and other technical areas to integrate imaging solutions into upstream workflows.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to business units and help shape the future direction of seismic imaging.
  • Stay inquisitive, creative, and delivery-focused while sharing learnings and supporting continuous improvement.

Criteria

  • 4+ years of applied geoscience experience in the energy industry.
  • A MSc or higher qualification in geoscience, engineering or related disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience with the latest seismic processing and imaging technology.
  • Experience in imaging technology development.
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages and compute platforms
  • Experience with ML/AI and data analytics a plus!
  • Have a curious mind and strong desire to solve complex problems and willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Demonstrate good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
