The opportunity
The Nominations and Allocations department of Commercial Services has an opportunity for a Volume Planner to join our team. Reporting to the Manager of Nominations and Allocations (Eastern Pipelines), you will be responsible for planning, scheduling, and authorizing the daily flow of gas on our Canadian Mainline and TQM systems. You will be accountable for ensuring contractual commitments are met, capacity for requested transportation service is maximized, and compression choices are optimized to minimize fuel and other pipeline system costs.
Our team acts as a critical bridge linking commercial and operational aspects of TC Energy’s pipeline business and we interact with multiple departments including, Operations Planning, Gas Control, Commercial, Contracts, and Billing and Credit. Your role as a Volume Planner will be highly visible with external parties in the natural gas industry and requires strong communication skills to provide consistent and comprehensive information to customers.
The Volume Planning team works 365 days of the year to support the commercial and physical operation of the Canadian Mainline and TQM systems and requires a modified work schedule. The schedule includes rotational duties between scheduling, hydraulic simulation, and project functions. Depending on the function, your workday will be between eight and 12 hours. The Volume Planning team also provides on-call support during off-hours to support Gas Control.
What you’ll do
Authorize shipper nominations for transportation services based on available pipeline capacity and tariff priority of service
Optimize daily pipeline capacity utilizing hydraulic modeling software (Synergi)
Determine daily optimal linepack targets and manage the pipeline system relative to those targets
Manage / negotiate Operating Balance Agreements (OBAs) with interconnecting pipelines daily
Manage the Mainline’s storage requirements daily with storage facilities and interconnecting pipelines as required
Provide Mainline Gas Control with daily operating plan for the current and following Gas Day
Provide daily operational information to internal stakeholders and external customers, including interconnecting pipelines
Negotiate Park and Loan (PAL) contracts with customers, considering current operational pipeline conditions
Collect, manipulate and analyze operational data to support regulatory hearings and commercial initiatives
Perform various project and administrative tasks related to Volume Planning responsibilities
Minimum qualifications
Relevant post-secondary education, which may include a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Commerce, Business or a technical college diploma
Four or more years of related / operations experience
Ability and willingness to work the Volume Planner modified schedule
An alternative combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred qualifications
Problem-solving skills and ability to translate business requirements into operational / technical solutions
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor your message for a variety of internal and external parties, as well as a strong customer service orientation
Knowledge of pipeline operations, hydraulic simulation software, NAESB nomination procedures, pipeline Tariff, transportation services/pricing, and transportation/storage contracts of the Mainline system
Proven ability to quickly understand and implement a wide variety of new technical and business concepts and solutions
Ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic environment with changing priorities under tight deadlines while exhibiting good judgement in decision making
Strong team orientation, demonstrating a high level of cooperation, initiative and motivation
