About the Role
At Suncor, our legal team is a valued strategic partner to the business. We are seeking a skilled and collaborative Specialist Legal Counsel to support our Downstream operations on a broad range of impactful legal matters. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams on commercial transactions, regulatory and environmental, health and safety matters, litigation and business-critical projects. Minimum Requirements:
Juris Doctor or LLB, with membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta
Minimum 3 years of related post-call experience in corporate, commercial or regulatory law
Strong knowledge of general corporate and commercial legal principles, with the ability to provide practical, business-oriented advice
Experience with regulatory compliance matters; experience in environmental, health and safety matters would be considered an asset
Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills, with strong judgment, business acumen and the ability to work effectively across teams and with senior stakeholders

Responsibilities:
Provide strategic, practical legal support to Suncor’s Downstream business across regulatory, environmental, health and safety matters, including emergency response, internal investigations and engagement with external regulators
Advise commercial teams on a broad range of matters, including retail and wholesale contracts, contract administration, real estate transactions, joint ventures and other strategic commercial initiatives
Support the structuring, negotiation and execution of transactions and projects by developing and applying effective legal processes, tools and procedures, while working closely with cross-functional teams
Deliver timely, business-focused legal advice to senior leaders and employees, influencing significant business decisions through a strong understanding of legal risk, business strategy and operational impact
Manage litigation, disputes and other contentious matters in partnership with internal stakeholders and external counsel, helping protect Suncor’s assets, reputation and commercial interests
Oversee external counsel effectively, including mandate management, strategic direction and cost control to ensure high-quality and efficient legal services
Contribute legal expertise to corporate working groups and committees, while mentoring internal clients and colleagues on legal issues, risk awareness and evolving business requirements
Location and other Key details:
The position will be based at the Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Center at 150 – 6th Ave S.W
Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday with business travel to sites
