Imperial Oil Q2 Net Income Rises 131% to C$2.19 Billion as Kearl and Cold Lake Produce 331,000 Barrels Per Day

ExxonMobil's 69.6%-owned Canadian unit posted C$2.19 billion in Q2 net income, up 131%, while Strathcona refinery faces a rail logistics challenge.

Imperial Oil Limited posted second-quarter 2026 net income of C$2,190 million, up 131% from C$949 million in Q2 2025, driven by elevated commodity prices throughout the period. ICE Brent crude opened Thursday at $92.27 per barrel, per Fortune, up $19.67 from a year ago and broadly consistent with the price environment that supported Imperial's Q2 realizations. Cash flow from operating activities reached C$2,704 million for the quarter. Capital expenditures totaled C$531 million. CEO John Whelan announced plans to accelerate the company's normal course issuer bid to completion before year-end 2026.

ExxonMobil Corporation owns 69.6% of Imperial and consolidated its results into the parent's own second-quarter earnings, reported the same day. As Oil Authority reported, ExxonMobil posted $14.5 billion in Q2 net income as part of $26.5 billion in combined earnings alongside Chevron. At the July 31 exchange rate of approximately 0.71 USD per Canadian dollar, Imperial's C$2,190 million net income converts to roughly $1.56 billion USD, representing approximately 10.8% of ExxonMobil's consolidated quarterly earnings before minority interest deductions.

Kearl and Cold Lake Drive Upstream Output

Total upstream production reached 414,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day in Q2 2026. Cold Lake thermal production contributed 149,000 barrels per day. Syncrude, at Imperial's 25% working interest, contributed 73,000 barrels per day to the quarterly total.

Kearl oil sands generated 257,000 total gross barrels per day, the largest single asset in Imperial's portfolio. Imperial operates Kearl and holds approximately 71% of the project, contributing 182,000 barrels per day to its own production share. A separate ExxonMobil subsidiary holds the remaining 29% non-operated working interest, producing approximately 75,000 barrels per day from Kearl. Both ownership stakes reside within the ExxonMobil corporate family, making Kearl entirely an intra-ExxonMobil asset split across two subsidiaries.

Strathcona Rail Issue Forces Refinery Guidance Cut

Imperial revised its full-year 2026 refinery throughput guidance to 370,000 to 380,000 barrels per day, down from the prior target of 395,000 to 405,000 barrels per day. Utilization guidance fell to a range of 85% to 88%, from the prior target of 91% to 93%. Unplanned downtime and a short-term rail logistics challenge at the Strathcona refinery in Edmonton drove the revision. Imperial expects to resolve the Strathcona rail issue by year-end 2026.

The guidance cut represents a reduction of approximately 25,000 barrels per day at the midpoint, or about 6% of prior refinery throughput targets. Actual Q2 2026 refinery throughput came in at 331,000 barrels per day at 76% utilization, already below the original guidance range. Petroleum product sales reached 446,000 barrels per day for the quarter, drawing on inventory to supplement constrained refinery output.

Shareholder Returns Accelerated

Imperial declared a Q3 2026 dividend of C$0.87 per share and paid C$421 million in dividends during Q2. Whelan said the board plans to complete the current normal course issuer bid ahead of schedule. Imperial's board renewed authorization to repurchase up to 5% of outstanding shares, equal to 24.18 million shares. The accelerated repurchase timeline reflects management's stated confidence in the earnings trajectory through year-end.

Chemical segment net income reached C$65 million in Q2 2026, up from C$21 million in Q2 2025, as margins expanded across the integrated value chain. For the first half of 2026, Imperial reported net income of C$3,130 million against C$2,237 million in H1 2025, a gain of 40%. Free cash flow for the six-month period totaled C$2,540 million.

ExxonMobil Canada: Two Subsidiaries, One Oil Sands Project

Imperial Oil serves as ExxonMobil's primary Canadian operating entity, responsible for oil sands production at Kearl and Cold Lake, refining at Strathcona and other facilities, and petrochemical operations. A separate ExxonMobil subsidiary holds the non-operated 29% working interest at Kearl alongside Imperial. Wire coverage of either parent or subsidiary earnings rarely flags this dual-subsidiary structure at the same oil sands project.

ExxonMobil holds 69.6% of Imperial, with the remaining 30.4% held publicly on the Toronto Stock Exchange. After removing that 30.4% minority interest, ExxonMobil's net attributable share of Imperial's C$2,190 million Q2 earnings equals approximately C$1,524 million. At the July 31 USD/CAD rate of 1.4018, that figure translates to roughly $1.09 billion USD, or about 7.5% of ExxonMobil's total $14.5 billion Q2 net income from this one Canadian subsidiary.

Sources and methodology

Oil Authority synthesis: we identified that Kearl oil sands is owned in full by ExxonMobil entities across two subsidiaries (Imperial at 71%, a second ExxonMobil subsidiary at 29%), a dual-subsidiary structure not typically flagged in wire earnings coverage. We applied ExxonMobil's 69.6% ownership stake to Imperial's C$2,190 million Q2 net income and converted at the July 31 USD/CAD rate of 1.4018 (Trading Economics) to derive an approximately $1.09 billion USD net contribution to ExxonMobil's Q2 consolidated earnings, representing roughly 7.5% of the parent's $14.5 billion quarterly result from this single Canadian subsidiary.
